How This Zakat Calculator Works

Our Zakat calculator follows the methodology of major Islamic scholars (including AMJA and IslamQA). It calculates your obligation at 2.5% of your total zakatable wealth — but only if it meets or exceeds the Nisab threshold.

📊 What Counts as Zakatable Wealth?

Asset Type Zakatable? Notes
Cash & Savings ✅ Yes All liquid assets: bank accounts, cash at home, etc.
Gold & Silver ✅ Yes Jewelry, coins, bullion — above personal use.
Stocks & Investments ✅ Yes Market value of shares and mutual funds.
Business Inventory ✅ Yes At current market value, not purchase price.
Personal Items ❌ No Clothes, car, home (unless for resale).

Understanding Nisab

Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth that makes Zakat obligatory. It’s defined as:

  • 87.48 grams of gold, OR
  • 612.36 grams of silver

Our calculator uses the lower monetary value of these two (usually silver), following the opinion that benefits the poor most — as endorsed by many contemporary scholars.

Real Example

Scenario: – Cash: $1,000 – Gold: 50g × $70/g = $3,500 – Silver: 200g × $0.85/g = $170 – Investments: $2,000 Total: $6,670

Nisab (silver-based): 612.36g × $0.85 = $520.50

Since $6,670 > $520.50 → Zakat due: 2.5% × $6,670 = $166.75

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

❓ Is this Zakat calculator Sharia-compliant?
Yes. Our calculator is based on mainstream Sunni scholarship (Hanafi, Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanbali) and verified against fatwas from IslamQA and AMJA. We use the lower of gold/silver Nisab to maximize benefit to recipients.
❓ Do I need to include my home or car?
No. Personal assets used for living (primary residence, personal vehicle, clothing) are not zakatable. Only assets held for investment or trade are included.
❓ What about debts I owe?
You may deduct short-term debts (due within the year) from your total wealth before calculating Zakat. Long-term debts (e.g., mortgage) are not deducted.
❓ Is my data stored or shared?
Absolutely not. All calculations happen in your browser using JavaScript. We never receive your financial data — privacy is built into our design.
❓ Can I use this for business Zakat?
Yes! Enter your business inventory and receivables at market value. For complex businesses, consult a qualified scholar.
